ShopSavvy vs. RedLaser – Which is better?

Consumers already spend more than half of their time interacting with online retailers from a mobile device. And as that number continues to grow, shopping enthusiasts are turning to price comparison apps to find the best deals.

The price comparison app marketplace is a crowded one, but shoppers shouldn’t get the idea that all of them are basically the same. A comparison of two of these apps — ShopSavvy and RedLaser, eBay’s product-finder app — prove that’s not the case.

Both of these apps give shoppers a simple way to find products from online retailers or in stores, read reviews on them, and get the best pricing. That, however, is where the similarities end. Initial testing showed that ShopSavvy produced search results that featured more local stores, more online retailers, and lower prices 70 percent of the time.

Testing was performed over a random set of 10 products spanning a variety of categories. ShopSavvy outdid RedLaser in the number of products displayed and in furnishing product-purchasing options based on pricing. Categories included books, movies, home and family, consumer electronics, video games, and office products.

ShopSavvy vs. RedLaser – 10-product comparison

For example, using ShopSavvy a search for “The Godfather Collection” on Blu-ray came up with 99 local results. RedLaser only produced two. In a search to find the same product for purchase online, ShopSavvy found 35 sites. RedLaser only found nine. Pricing for both new and used sets were lowest on ShopSavvy, as well.

Even though RedLaser found fewer places to purchase them both locally and online, it did find lower prices for letter-size HP Multipurpose Paper and LEGO Star Wars AT-RT 75002.

Consumers wanting to find the best price comparison application would be well-served to look at more than just the apps cool features and interesting functionality and take a longer look under the hood. The backbone of any good price-comparison app is its database. It’s access to the prices, locations, and reviews that will determine whether or not consumers can trust it to find them the lowest prices and best local results. For example, ShopSavvy’s platform, Product Cloud 2.0, lets the app offer real-time pricing, inventory, reviews, photos, videos and other information for more than 20 million products. And it’s the database that lets the app outpace apps from tech giants like eBay and Amazon.

So to sum it up, ShopSavvy is better. Take a look at the results from our 10-product comparison.
