Coach Guitar is a neat app that you can download on your iPhone or iPad that brings that learning experience and techniques to your fingertips.
Learn when you want and where you want. The download is for free and it comes with various in-app purchases so you can customize the app specifically around your needs and goals.
You can choose the Beginner level package for $3.99 or the Premier for $7.99. You get a basic set of songs to learn from, and if you want more, there are several that are available for purchase, each costing about $3.99.
Coach Guitar is easy to use and will have you playing quickly because it does not bore you with music theory. What it does have is an easy to navigate color-codes Fretboard, so you learn finger placement fast. The pace of each lesson is designed to follow a step-by-step approach, just as a teacher would use.
The app also relies on videos to teach concepts and technique so you can see first and then practice. What I liked about the app is that it is made for today. You don’t really have to waste time playing songs that don’t interest you, because that tends to be what turns people off to lessons.
Instead, you get a library of a few very simple songs, like “Happy Birthday”, and a bunch of songs ranging in difficulty, that range from classic rock to today’s pop. Anyone who downloads this app will find something they like.
An even bigger plus is that the app can be used by both left- and right-handled players. This is a big plus! Your iPhone becomes the guitar, which allows you to learn correct finger placement.
I found the various search techniques for finding new pieces to play especially well thought out. You can search by artist, title, and even difficulty. Depending on what you are thinking, you can find something to play.
I feature I would like to see in future updates would be some changing out of the intermediate level lessons that come in the app for free, just for variety.
You should seriously consider downloading Coach Guitar if you have even the slightest interest in learning to play guitar. If you are worried that your English is not that great and you not be able to use the app to its maximum potential, then fear not, as the app supports a variety of languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian/Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Russian.
