SpamHound puts the power of what to block and how to block it. For instance, you can blacklist spammers by creating and saving rules that apply to your specific needs. By using keywords that you’ve noticed in the spam messages, you can prevent the onslaught of messages that include words like “discount,” “special deal,” and more. From there, you define what part of the message to search, such as “From,” “Body,” etc.

The app uses these rules to filter out the offenders and ensure you never see their messages. To be sure you don’t miss an important message just because they happen to use one of your blacklist keywords, you can add those senders into a whitelist. You’ll never miss their messages.

As an added level of correctness, SpamHound offers a Rule Checker. This allows you to test out your rule, to make sure it actually works and you can see what it ends up filter out.

Speaking of filters, there are lots of ways to specify your keywords. You can even use wildcard characters to make your rules more meaningful. The variety with which you can define and use rules is so precise, I really had to test them out carefully so as to not miss important messages from work!

You can also block certain users and messages with particular characteristics. For instance, you can block messages that contain only links. We know how notorious those are. You can also block messages that are coming from conspicuously short phone numbers. If it does not have at least 10 digits, something is wrong!!

The layout of the app is clean and easy to navigate around. I found the listings and the ability to enter information extremely straightforward and clear. There were no surprises and it was apparent as to what needed to be filled in. Once you’ve created filters and rules, it is easy to go back and tweak them as you wish.

I would say that one thing I would like to see happen is maybe a report of the type of messages that were blocked just to see how well the app is working, and to make sure you have everyone you need to whitelist, so you are not missing important messages.
