An enjoyable way to look up synonyms!
Thesaurus Word Map offers something that your conventional thesaurus doesn’t: visual appeal. Instead of the usual format of simply matching a certain word with synonyms, the presentation is in a word map format, making the word hunt more engaging. Instead of reaching for that thick and bulky thesaurus, a few taps on your Android device will do the trick. Check out our review for the Thesaurus Word Map app for Android.
Learning is certainly more stimulating and, consequently, more effective, when done in a fun manner. Educational apps for mobile devices have certainly gone this route, and Thesaurus Word Map is no different. It is simple enough: you have a thesaurus that provides synonyms presented in a mind map style interface. Even without internet connection, this word map can function fully, extracting synonym after synonym from an extensive English database.
Navigating and using Thesaurus Word Map is simple enough if you want to find synonyms for a specific word. Tap on Lookup New Word and type the word you have in mind. Intuitive, it will give word suggestions as you type the word. Branches will immediately sprout from the word, leading to the synonyms you’re looking for. Simply tapping on a word basically causes new synonym branches to shoot out of it, forming a “word map”. So the more you tap on it, the more similar words will branch out. Take note of the color background of the words. If the background is pink, that means there are still synonyms for that word available, so you can keep tapping on it to make them all come out. The moment the background color is no longer pink, no more synonyms will sprout even if you tap on the word. At a glance, the map may come across as too complex, but you can zoom and pan for a better and clearer view.
Thesaurus Word Map boasts a minimalistic design, which is a good thing, considering how continuous tapping will lead to a wide word map; otherwise, users will be left with an interface that is “too busy” because of unnecessary clutter. The visual effect of the mind map format also had not gone unappreciated by users, turning what would have been an ordinary (ergo, boring) process of looking up word meanings actually fun and enjoyable. Since the transitions and movements of the map are fluid, it offers smooth and fuss-free operation. Also, the fact that Thesaurus Word Map is fully functional even offline is a definite plus. That means you can have access to its large English database without downloading anything else.
Some users may be turned off by the size of this app. It is quite bulky and occupies a lot of space, expanding to about 35mb at times. Compressing it into a smaller size for android devices would be a good idea. However, for most of the modern android devices, this won’t be a big problem because of the normally huge storage capacity. Thesaurus Word Map is clearly a more enjoyable and faster way to look up synonyms for words. It saves a lot of time spent browsing through pages and pages of a bulky thesaurus, and even offers attractive visuals while you’re at it.
