It requires some quick thinking!
If you want a mindless app to zone out to, this is not the app you want to play. In Atmosflares, you have seconds to respond to several flares appearing onto the screen. The goal is to explode these flares. It also requires some quick thinking because you will want to combine and explode flares of the same color. The beginning levels are pretty easy but as you progress, you’ll see that the game actually becomes quite challenging. The flares come quicker and you have less time to respond. Explode as many flares as possible before time runs out. Explode flares of the same color together and score even more points.
Atmosflares is set in space and there are two modes: career mode and survival mode. In career mode, you work your way up the ranks and try to beat different stages on different planets. Each planet having it’s additional challenges to deal with. In career mode you begin on the planet Neptune and try to progress through all the planets of the solar system. Basically in the game, flares of different colors appear on the screen. You use the touch screen to select the flare or flares you want and then you press, “explode” to explode them. Based on this, the game sounds pretty unexciting. But the flares are moving quickly, bouncing up and down on the screen. The farther you go in the game, the faster the flares move and the harder it is to select combinations of flares. As you go from level to level in the game you will collect and store different powers that will help you along the way.
Survival mode is essentially the same except it is not divided into different stages. You just play until you lose. And instead of storing the powers the game provides you, you will use them instantly as they appear on the screen. So try and score a certain amount of points before time runs out, otherwise that’s it! Game over.
There are some pretty cool features that this game has. One noteworthy feature is the power flares that you get in the game. In career mode, sometimes flares will have a symbol on them. Each symbol is related to some type of power or effect. If you collect a power type flare, these will be saved in a backpack in the game. After you obtain the power, you can then use it on future levels in the game. In survival mode, these power flares will be activated as soon as they appear on the screen.
One of the more useful powers is the slow motion power. It causes the flares to move at a slower rate. This give you more time to explode better combinations of flares. Especially once you get to the higher levels and the flares are moving really rapidly. There are other powers as well. Some change the flares all to one color and give you more points per explosion. But it’s more fun to just play Atmosflares and find out what the powers are for yourself.
This game does have some downsides to it. Mostly, it is difficult to understand the rules of the game when you first start playing. The instructions are extremely unclear. You have to learn through a trial and error process until you can better grasp exactly how the controls work. The game itself is a simple concept, the controls however are unclear. But once you figure out how to play, you’ll likely want to keep playing.
