Mace, pepper spray, and small alarm gadgets all provide great ways to possible stop an attack when it’s actually happening. What is better is being able to do something a bit more preventive before it gets to the point of having to fend off an attack.
Covert Alert is just such an app. It allows the user to send out a covert alert message to designated contacts so they know you may be in a potentially dangerous situation. The key is to use it when you feel like you are in danger. You can use it while in danger, too, but best to use it as a preventive measure.
The app is designed to be very secure. All it asks of you to use it is your first and last name, an email address to assist in managing your account, and a very secure password. Once this is all set up, it will be easy to add your designated contacts.
Please be sure to add contacts who you know will be ok with getting alerts from you. You want to choose people who will be able and willing to help. Even if they live far away, they still may be of assistance at least to reach out and contact your local contacts to make sure someone knows what is going on and can assist.
What makes Covert Alert better than mace or pepper spray is that it’s hands free. You design your account to recognize your voice and special key phrases or words. Those phrases then trigger different actions by the app. Actions include messages that are sent to you contact list, emergency and non-emergency ones, a link to your location based on your device’s GPS signal. This is called the S.O.S. distress system. If you are near danger, you can speak a catch phrase which won’t alert anyone around you – something like “What time is it?” or “Looks like rain.” – just about anything you can think of that would not attract attention.
Voice activation allows you to lock and unlock the alert system, so again, you can do things in covert mode. You can also turn on the recording feature, which takes 15-minute snippets so you have information about the situation in which you are in. All recordings are saved to your account which you can then access by visiting covertalert.com.
What would be nice to have in a future upgrade is the ability to send shorter snippets of recording to those on your contact list. They will know better what’s going on.
Free to use and reliable to a fault, Covert Alert is an app all must have, not just women. It’s a great tool for kids as they will be able to use their own secret pass phrases to alert you and other family members whenever they may feel threatened. Covert Alert is an all around great app.
